The long winter months have reeked havoc on the exterior of your home. The landscaping is overgrown and the patio is a mess. Where should you start to get everything ready for the warmer weather? Which projects can or should you try to do your self? And which projects should you hire out, if any?
It may seem like a daunting task. But once you get started, the outcome will be so satisfying that the work won't seem near as hard as it did when you started.
Just as you should with any project, start by making a plan. I typically walk around my home and take photos so that I can review them and put a plan and a budget together. As you study the photos, take notes and list the chores and projects that what to accomplish. Will you need to do any replanting or pruning? How does the grass look? Do the trees need trimming? Is it time to re-mulch the flower beds? How does your concrete look? If you have a patio will it need power washing, repairing or repainting? What about your fences? Is the garden fence still in good shape? Does your wood fence need to be re-stained? Is this the year to redo the walkway driveway or build a fire pit or paver patio? Sketch out a plan and a budget and start putting your plan into action.
Once my plan is put together I always start with the cleaning and de-cluttering projects first. Clean up and haul away all the debris and clippings that have fallen on your property of the winter months. Sweep and power wash all the hard surfaces, including your fence, to get them ready for any painting or repairs. If you find that for the most part you really need a little trimming and maybe some re-mulching etc., then or even a little repainting or minor concrete repairs, you can probably do those your self. if you handy, a DIY paver patio or fit pit, may be something you can handle on your own. Unless you are a contractor, you may want hire out major repairs such as driveway replacement or major fence repairs. However, some of you are handy enough that even those projects don't scare you off. The main thing is to stay safe and stay within your budget. The last thing I do when the season is right for part of the country I refresh my flower beds, and refresh or replenish any mulch. Once your landscaping is restored, you will be happy you put in the work. Not only it will gives you months of outdoor enjoyment, but the curb appeal of your home will increase 10 fold!
